Androgens shorten the longevity of women: sopranos last longer

Are women who use AAS significantly shortening their life spans?

Exp Clin Endocrinol Diabetes. 2003 Jun;111(4):230-1.

Androgens shorten the longevity of women: sopranos last longer.

Nieschlag E, Kramer U, Nieschlag S.

Institute of Reproductive Medicine of the Westphalian Wilhelms-University, Munster, Germany. nieschl@uni-muenster.de

Earlier we found that longevity of castrati was identical to that of intact singers. These findings were in disagreement with the prevailing concept that testosterone might shorten life and might be responsible for the shorter life expectancy of men compared to women. We have now continued our research into the life expectancy of singers, considering them as a paradigm of nature to investigate life-long effects of sex hormones, and resulting in the finding that sopranos, being more oestrogenised, live significantly longer than altos who are more androgenised, while basses, more androgenised, show a tendency towards a longer life than tenors, who are less androgenised. These findings, supported by results of epidemiological investigations indicate that women are protected from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and osteoporosis by higher oestrogen levels, while the same effect maybe exerted in men by testosterone.

I have always been an alto...now I get to walk around in fear, not to mention the anxiety of being an alto my whole life, of dying young?

Ah, but if you listen to what nandi is saying, if you take androgens, you get that protective effect of the basses. relax Torchy you got it covered.

If I listen to Nandi, that post contradicts itself.

Actually I'm speculating (or the authors are) just the opposite: That there is a sexual dimorphism in the protective effects of sex hormones. Estrogens are protective in women, whereas androgens have the opposite effect. In men it's the other way around, with androgens having a protective effect.

So! This article is telling me as a female who has had a high natural androgen level all her life , is going to die earlier. Well, that would be a God send.

All in all, this article is merely looking for another reason to try to pinpointthe "why's" of death. If one sat there and speculted any thing related to death, they will find something causing harm.

Even if the use of AAS did shorten a woman's life, I personally would not necessarily advocate abandoning their use. If in fact they do shorten lifespan, it is just another piece of data that a woman should have available when making the decision about steroid use.

It really boils down to a quality of life issue IMO. I've never seen any actuarial figures on the lifespan of NASCAR drivers vs. ordinary individuals, but I would imagine that statistically they have a higher mortality rate that contributes to a shorter overall (statistical) lifespan. If they love racing should they quit because of that? Of course not.

Exactly. That is why I stated anyone can research something to make it look un-appealing.
